
Understanding Cabochon Point Light Customization: Base Design, Housing Options, and Cable Selection
In the world of Entertainment Lighting, Cabochon point lights have become increasingly popular. They are widely used for Theme park Ferris wheel, signage, and decorative installations.
However, not all Cabochon lights are the same. While many suppliers offer similar-looking products, the internal design — especially the base — can vary significantly between manufacturers.
Recently, we received an inquiry from a client requesting a customized base design for our Cabochon lights. This led us to develop two specific variations, which we'd like to share in this technical post.
The Challenge: Non-Standard Base Designs
Cabochon lights are available in many styles, especially those with colored housings. However, the base design underneath the housing often differs from one supplier to another. These differences affect:
Mounting compatibility (how the light attaches to surfaces)
Wiring access (how cables connect and route)
Sealing performance (waterproofing effectiveness)
For standard colored housing versions, there is no minimum order quantity (MOQ) — they are readily available. But for custom base designs, suppliers typically require MOQs due to tooling and production setup costs.
For this specific project, we managed to keep the MOQ at just 500 pieces — significantly lower than industry norms for custom base tooling.
Two Custom Base Options We Developed
Based on the client's requirements, we created two Cabochon variations:

Both options operate on low-voltage AC24V, making them safer for outdoor and damp-location installations.
Cable and Connector Selection for Outdoor Use
For outdoor applications — where UV exposure, rain, and temperature swings are daily realities — cable and connector quality is critical.
We offer the following cable options:

Both IP67 and IP68 male/female connectors are available with UL certification — ensuring compliance with North American safety standards.
Why Cable and Connector Choices Matter
Note: Rubber cables are thicker and better suited for larger point lights where cable durability is a priority. They are less ideal for very small or tight installation spaces.
