Custom SK6812-3535 S-Shape LED Strip – Overcoming Design Challenges for a Client

At Xuanan Lighting, we take pride in delivering high-quality LED solutions tailored to our clients’ unique needs. Recently, we had the opportunity to collaborate with Joel on a custom SK6812-3535 s shape LED strip project, which, despite some initial challenges, turned out to be a great success. Here’s how we navigated the process and achieved the desired outcome.

Initial Inquiry and Material Challenges

Joel first reached out to us through our website, expressing interest in a WS2815 RGBW LED strip. However, due to a surge in raw material costs and a shortage of WS2815 RGBW chips at the time, we had to propose an alternative solution: replacing the WS2815 with the SK6812-3535 RGB chip. After careful consideration, Joel agreed to proceed with the SK6812-3535 RGB chip for a custom design.

Sample vs. Small Batch Order and Cost Considerations

Initially, Joel was interested in a sample. However, we explained that whether for a sample or a small batch order, a $100 USD tooling fee was required for the custom PCB design. To ease the burden for our first-time collaboration, we offered to cover half of the tooling cost. Joel was grateful for our flexibility and decided to place a small batch order of 20 meters for testing.

Design Challenges and Solutions

Joel’s initial requirement was for a 5MM-wide strip. However, after our engineers designed the PCB layout, we discovered that a 60 LEDs/m strip with a 5MM width could not achieve the desired S-shaped bending.

We promptly communicated this issue to Joel, who then suggested increasing the width to a maximum of 10MM, with a preference for 6-8MM if possible. The key requirement was maintaining a 90-degree bendability.

Based on his feedback, we redesigned the PCB, and after careful evaluation, we determined that an 8MM width was the optimal solution—it was not as wide as 10MM but still allowed for the required 90-degree bending.

Final Production and Client Satisfaction

Once production was complete, we shared a test video and detailed product images with Joel. He was extremely satisfied with the results. We are now eagerly awaiting his feedback after he receives the shipment and look forward to the possibility of further collaboration in the future.
