How It Works: The Communication Protocol

The WS2812B-2020 uses a single-wire, Non-Return-to-Zero (NRZ) communication protocol. This is the key to its simplified wiring, as multiple LEDs can be connected in a chain with only one data signal line.

Data Transmission Process

  1. Data Stream: A series of 24-bit data packets is sent down the data line. Each 24-bit packet contains the color data for one specific LED, in GRB (Green-Red-Blue) order.

  2. Pixel Extraction: The first LED in the chain reads the first 24 bits of data to determine its color. It then "consumes" this data.

  3. Signal Reshaping and Forwarding: The remaining data is reshaped and amplified by the first LED's internal circuitry and then passed on to the next LED in the chain.

  4. Cascading: This process repeats down the entire chain, with each LED reading its own 24-bit data packet and forwarding the rest.

  5. Reset: After all data has been sent, a RESET signal (a low-level pulse lasting longer than 280µs) tells all LEDs to latch in their new colors simultaneously.
